You have three seconds. That is roughly how long a mobile visitor gives a page before hitting back - and Google knows it, which is why speed is baked into rankings through Core Web Vitals. A slow site pays twice: fewer visitors arrive, and fewer of those convert.
Google measures three things: how fast the main content appears (LCP), how quickly the page responds when tapped (INP), and whether things jump around while loading (CLS - the reason you tap 'Menu' and hit an advert instead). Pass all three and you get a ranking nudge; fail and you compete with a weight on your ankle.
The usual suspects: enormous uncompressed images, a plugin graveyard from years of tinkering, cheap overcrowded hosting, ancient sliders and effects libraries, and themes that load everything everywhere. We recently removed a single legacy slider plugin from a client homepage and cut twelve script files in one go.
Compress and lazy-load images. Cache properly. Remove what you don't use - be ruthless. Choose hosting for performance, not price alone. Test with Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool before and after, so you are measuring, not guessing. Or send us your address - a speed check is part of our free SEO audit.
